T40 vs. T41
T40 vs. T41
I am sure that this has been discussed, but I can't seem to find it when I have done a search.
Ordered a refurbed T41 from IBM Canada with the following...
Configuration Type: Notebook, PC Card
Installed Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Processor Type: Intel Pentium M Processor 1400MHz
Memory: 256MB
Disc Capacity: 30GB
Graphic subsystem: ATI Mobility RADEON 7500 32 MB
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo 16X/10X/24X/8X Max
Was only $1500 CDN - about $1100 USD
Then, just found out that the new company I started working for has T40's at their price....
Configuration Type: Notebook, PC Card
Installed Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Processor Type: Intel Pentium M Processor 1500MHz
Memory: 1024MB
Disc Capacity: 40GB
Graphic subsystem: ATI Mobility RADEON 7500 32 MB
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo 16X/10X/24X/8X Max
All this for $1750 CDN - about $1300 USD
What are the pros and cons - would love to have the gig of RAM, and the processor is faster, but I understand the bus speed is slower?
Anyway, just thought I would put it out there.
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

This one is easy. The T40 for sure. It isn't the bus speed that is faster, they both have 400MHz FSB. It is the RAM speed is PC2100 for the T40 vs PC2700 for the T41. That means little in the long run-- as in you won't notice it. Plus the faster processor and the more RAM means the T40 will operate considerably faster than the T41. Plus the T40 has the (most likely) faster hard drive (5400rpm) and a larger hard drive
The only thing you haven't mentioned is the screen resolutions of the two models. Is it SXGA+ or XGA for each?

Also, as regards the memory speed (T40=PC2100 v. T41=PC2700), while the PC2100 in the T40 runs at near the theoretical maximum throughput in benchmark tests at around 1900MBsec, the PC2700 tends to only run at around 2100MBsec, instead of the expected 2600~2700MBsec. Most notebook memory operates more slowly than desktop memory for lower power consumption.
In all the benchmarks I've run, the PC2700 memory in a T41 is only 2%~4% faster than the PC2100 memory in a T40, resulting in no discernable real-world performance increase. So the T40, if memory speed is the deciding factor, is a good choice.
Daniel.

Miss my IBM ThinkPad T42p...
