Saving a password protected T61p HDD?

#1 Post by martin_boro » Thu Jul 04, 2019 2:03 pm

Hi,

is it possible to save a password protected HDD that came from a dead T61p? I do not know the password and I DO NOT care about the data on the drive. Just want to be able to use the drive in the future.
As far as I know, the HDD is working, but it fails to do most I/O operations, like mount to any OS and reading SMART data.

I already tried wiping it with HD Tune and DBAN, but it hasn't helped at all.

I never tried it, but found some information claiming that ATA Secure Erase can work in some conditions:

I saved once a passworded HDD with Victoria program (http://hdd.by/victoria/). But you need to know the master password. In my case it was 32 spaces (default for IBM and Hitachi HDDs). And the disk has to be connected directly as secondary HD, i.e. not via USB adapter. And yes, mine was IDE HDD.
