X61s screen replacing & cpu temp questions

#1 Post by Tumber » Wed Oct 27, 2021 1:32 pm

Hi!
I've brought an X61s for 30$ and itt arrived with a cracked screen. I took it apart and it has a Samsung LTN121XJ-L07 screen, but i only found an LTN121XJ-L03 panel locally. I don't want to order one from abroad, I'm worried it will also arrive cracked. Is it compatible?

Also, I repasted the cpu and it goes all the way up to 65 celsius, is that normal? I used GD900 and an 1mm thick thermal pad for the chipset. Did I screw up something there also?

For idle, that's kinda high. If it's under load, then it's nothing. These CPUs can go up to 80C or more.

I don't have any knowledge about the screen, though, sorry.

Its under 100% load, on idle it gets 40-50°C.

Give me a bit of time. I have a number of X60 and X61 units, have swapped screens before, and made a list of compatible and incompatible LCDs as part of my research. I just have to remember where I put that file. :oops:

Found it!

Sadly, the LTN121XJ-L03 is not compatible. The connector is the same, but the pinout is different, and very dangerously so.

Partial pinout, LTN121XJ-L07:

1 Ground
2 +3.3v
3 +3.3v
4 Ground

Partial pinout, LTN121XJ-L03:

1 +3.3v
2 +3.3v
3 Ground
4 Ground

This means that when you connect the LTN121XJ-L03 to the X61s, it will short one +3.3v power rail and blow a fuse on the system board at the very least. Worst case is you damage the LCD, the cable, and the system board. :oops:

Aside from the LTN121XJ-L07, the X60/61 family used these standard panels:
* CMO N121X5-L06
* Boe Hydis HT121X01-101

"Standard" in this case means "not the Ultralight screen that requires a completely different lid assembly".

I've personally swapped in this one from a Dell D400 to an X60, but don't recommend it as it looks worse than the stock screen (the D400 is an older laptop model). Also, the top part of the LCD panel's metal frames is slightly bigger, and may need some finagling in order to fit inside the lid.
* Samsung LTN121XJ-L02

My research indicates that the following LCD panels are compatible, based on their datasheets (same connector and pinout). Note that I don't have personal experience with transplanting these screens into an X60 series Thinkpad, so I'll give the usual "I could be wrong" disclaimer.
* Samsung LTN121XJ-L06
* IDTech IAXG02C )
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons :lol:

Thanks for the reply. I have no other choice, I have to order it from china and it will cost more than the laptop.

The alternative is to order the adapter cable that's used for the SXGA+ mod, then buy that Samsung LTN121XJ-L03 locally.

been a while since the last post but I'll add my 2 cents anyway

imho buy the SXGA+ BOE hydis panel and do the mod - it will end up costing about the same as the XGA panel and is AFFS (similar to IPS) rather than one of the worst crimes against humanity of a TN panel you will ever come across

I agree, The X61 Samsung standard panel is one of the worst crimes against humanity of a TN panel, just behind the X300 panel :mrgreen:

About the temperatures given by the OP: My X61s with a L7700 idles below 45°C and goes over about 55 during light web browsing. Under full load it can reach 80°C too. 65°C seems a bit too high for an idle temperature. Maybe the OP´s X61s has too many task in background.
