Performance comparison between ThinkPad W701 with NVidia Quadro 2800M, ThinkPad X230 with Intel HD4000 and ThinkPad T520

Hello Forum,

I made some extensive benchmarks in order to compare a ThinkPad W701 with a Quadro 2800M GPU, a ThinkPad X230 with an Intel HD 4000 GPU and a ThinkPad T520 with integrated Intel HD 3000 and discrete NVidia NVS 4200M GPU.

The results are quite interesting, CPU wise the X230 with its Intel Core i5-3320M CPU beats the W701 with Intel Core i7–720QM CPU by a big margin! In terms of GPU power the W701 destorys the other competitors :-)

I'm not really surprised.

The i7-720QM's Turbo clock is too low with 4 cores active--a paltry 166MHz increase from the 1.6GHz base clock; in contrast, the slowest Sandy Bridge quad-core i7 mobile (2630QM) has a base clock of 2.0GHz and a 4-core Turbo clock that's 600MHz higher, a more significant increase.

I suspect there's some cache contention going on as well-- some have mentioned that turning off HT improves the i7's performance a bit.

Some sandybridge/ivybridge dual core are known to benchmark higher than previous generation of quadcore.

Nice to see intel HD 3000 performing well in windows 10.

I'd chalk that to two things:
1. architectural improvements in Sandy and Ivy Bridge.
2. very aggressive Turbo Boost due to lower heat output.
