I actually fell asleep grading papers with a coffee cup in my hand Saturday. The Thinkpad worked well I thought, channeling the coffee through onto my pants and yes that coffee was hot. So I cut it off, pulled the battery and dried it out, I thought. It worked great the rest of the day. I got up this morning and it wouldn't do anything. So I took the keyboard/cover off and swabbed all the connections with denatured alcohol and pulled the hard drive and reseated it. Started it and it gave all the right symbols, the screen illuminated like they do before it goes black with the windows symbol (WIN 10), and that was it. I can change the brightness of the screen, but that's it. I can't get the setup screen to display either.

Any ideas? Don't know how to check using an external monitor. This is the newest Thinkpad I have ever owned. I rely on my laptop for home, church and school so a diagnosis is really what I need most.

I searched the forums and scoured the internet and found another post with a similar plot line. The OP mentioned that maybe the fuses on the MB were affected and that might be why he could change screens and not make it work. He said he could see faint images at a certain angle.

I don't see any images. And I certainly don't have the skills to solder new fuses. I can replace parts.

So Motherboard? If so, I am looking at enough cost to just buy another used one.

Sorry to hear that your X-series Thinkpad had coffee spill on your ThinkPad...

Sorry for yet more bad news for you...

But liquids like coffee (or cola) also make your keyboard sticky, hard to type on, especially in this day and age of chiclet (island-type) style keyboard...

Agree that if Motherboard is gone, might be worth getting another ThinkPad...

Suggestions:

a) Get the newest ThinkPad

b) get another ThinkPad of the same model and age, especially if you have a model-specific docking station.
At least with this (b) option, you have a backup LCD screen as spare part in your hand...

I had someone have me fix their X1C because they spilled some OJ on the keyboard. Not enough to kill it but made the enter and shift keys sticky. The solution, ironically enough, is to "spill" Isopropyl alcohol on the affected area. Works best when done with a syringe... hypodermic is best so the thin needle gets into the Keyboard but I did it with a standard one I use to fill my printer with ink.

Spillproof =/= waterproof.

The spillproof is only designed to help mediate small spills...mostly with water...not a guarantee protection.
