is there battery whitelist in T480? bios-mod related

#1 Post by bill_think » Fri Oct 04, 2024 4:59 am

hello all, im new here. i hope this post follow the rule correctly. i currently receive t480 as i need a cheap laptop for works because my main laptop is kinda broken now.
i know that the battery will likely to be in a bad condition (i havent check yet, the laptop is still in the mail). but even if the battery is still good, i want a spare battery (talking about the external one).

well, is there a whitelist for battery in lenovo t480? i have searched the bios-mod forum. in that forum, they mostly talk about the mpci whitelist.
in other forum, some says that there is a whitelist for battery too.

im asking this because where i live, its hard to find a genuine original battery from lenovo. i have to source it from other country, and some of them dont do international shipping because its a battery.
i wanted to buy battery from other country tho, but for right now, i cant afford nor justify the tax for imported goods here where i live. its really huge, and i dont even know if the goods will arive to me after its in my country (its complicated here).

so i want to buy third party batteries in my country, the ratings in online shop here says its pretty good, but some seller say its incompatible with my laptop. they said the replacement battery have to match the original battery that comes with the laptop (example: original 61 non plus, then i have to buy the 61 non plus variant, the say i cant use 61+ or 61++), is this true?

so i need to know is there a bios mod for this problem? or where should i search it?

thank you all for reading and helping
sorry, english is not my main language.

Welcome to the Forum.

There is NO battery whitelist on the T480 and you can use any 61, 61+ or 61++ external battery.

Thank you for the answer. So in this case, i can use third party battery right? Some says the battery need a authenticity chip, or the laptop refuse to charge it. Is this true?

Third-party batteries that claim compatibility must include that authentication chip to work.

I've seen third party batteries work just fine in this very model. Read reviews of the specific battery to be certain. And make sure you can return it if it doesn't work.

Ah, ok then. I need to be careful. Weirdly, one seller told me that his third party battery will work on my laptop only if its the same type of capacity (example: if original is 61+ then i have to buy the third party 60+ from him, not the other variant), thats why i ask in my original post about wether t480 with original 61 non plus can use 60+ / 60++ battery or not. Idk, its kinda weird... do you ever heard something like this?

The review from this seller is good tho, and some other seller too

I want to try his battery tho, but after asking him, he insist that i have to buy the matching one, but i want the 61++ (i got 60 with the laptop). I want to just buy it and try it myself... but i havent discuss it with the seller. Im just afraid if i insist on buying after what he told me, he wont accept return if the battery dont work with my laptop

Oh and one thing, am i better of buying 100w or 130w powerbank as an alternative to buying battery? But my concern is about the powerbank efficiency, and im afraid it will perform worst then the battery. I found the ugreen nexode, heard pretty good things about it.

My other concern is, with powerbank, its just the same with constant charging i think. I dont know that is a bad thing or not.

Im pretty mobile user, many times i dont get access to power outlet, so getting a portable way of powering my laptop for relatively long time is my priorty.

Sorry, idk if my reply is deviating from this original post title or not, please tell me if i need to make separate post. Thank you!

All 61/61+/61++ batteries are interchangeable. If a laptop takes one, it will take another. I am not familiar with 60/60+/60++ batteries. This is not official Lenovo branding, as far as I know.

Then don't buy from him. Plenty of sellers that are open about what they selling without any shady business practices

A powerbank is a whole different thing. It's an external device for charging/powering your system in case of emergency (ran out of battery, no access to electricity, etc.) It is not a replacement for an internal battery.

Do NOT buy any 60/60+/60++ battery, ONLY 61/61+/61++.

i am so sorry, i dont know why i keep typing 60, what i mean is 61. my bad.
thank you for clarifying the battery compatibility.

thank you dr_st and realblackstuff. i will try to look other seller now, i hope i can find the battery. its hard to find original battery here, and i know that third party battery is somewhat not worth it to buy because how incosistent many of them and how almost will degrade faster than the original. but i need this battery now. i will report back here with my findigs. thank you once again.

it is entirely possible to not have an internal battery at all and only run on a powerbank though it is more prone to your laptop dying because the charging cable unplugged and more inconvenient because the you have to separate hard objects

Of course, just like it's possible to run from the mains without any battery at all.

Granted, a power bank might be handy when you are far from the mains. Not quite the same user experience as an internal battery in my book, but definitely viable.

I have been successfully using a chinese type 61 battery for over a year and just now (Apr 2025) I started to get the message that it is not an original lenovo battery and it will not charge it. Ir started at around 90% charge, will consume power from it but will not charge it.

Did a recent lenovo update implement a battery check? Any way to get around it?
