Yoga 910 Boot device not found

#1 Post by cfds » Sat Jun 29, 2019 11:32 pm

Hello all,

I have this Yoga 910 since a 1.5 years now. Right in the beginning I had multiple blue screens followed by boot device not found. Bought a new SSD but ended up reinstalling a clean windows 10 on the old SSD. Cannot say the problem really got away but it happened less frequently and did not occurred for about a year, I suffered more from the occasional "normal" BSOD where it crashes and restart.
Now Since a week the problem boot device not found has reappeared. Clearly this is a different crash as the blue screen I get is only brief followed by a attempted restart with boot device not found. I end up using the reset button but have the feeling that does nothing, anyway in general after 5 to 10 min leaving the device it starts normally.
I did not dropped the laptop, did a RAM check - all ok. Avast and Mallware bites are not showing any threads.

My gut feeling is that its hardware related seen the 5 to 10 min "rest" period needed for it to find the boot media. I am a bit reluctant to use my unused spare SSD as I have to reinstall everything from scratch. I believe with this issue a backup could potentially transfer the problem if its software related.
Point to note is that I am currently in India and the device goes from a air-conditioned room into a non air-conditioned room.

Please feel free to share your inputs. I have bought a 2nd generation 12" Thinkpad X1 tablet to carry with me while I am traveling for work. It will help me to make notes on the fly and can act as a spare device if my 910 fails. Sad really but I lost confidence in the 910. I find it a great device, use it for work and personal use - the 4K touch display is a pleasure to watch and use and even now after 1.5 years I still love it. I would invest in a new Mainboard if needed as the laptop is still in pristine condition.

Just a guess, since you have intermittent "Boot device not found", you may have either of these problems:

1) Your older SSD may be starting to fail (noted that it's only a 18-month old SSD), OR

2) Your computer motherboard (perhaps SSD controller?) maybe defective, which may warrant a motherboard replacement.

Personally, the easiest way to find out if it's (1) or (2) is to install your new SSD into your notebook computer, to see if this problem goes away.
If yes, new SSD means no problem, then it's your older SSD that is starting to fail.
If no, then perhaps it's a motherboard problem.

IF you have customized Windows settings all set up on your newer SSD, you can:

a) Install newer SSD into your computer

b) Take a disk image snapshot of your newer SSD to a 3rd SSD/HDD, so that you can restore from it.
If you don't have a 3rd SSD/HDD, you can try to take this disk image snapshot onto your older SSD.

c) Oh, and don't forget to backup your data before doing above (a/b)!

Yes, the plan is to use the new SSD and see how it behaves in the 910, I think its hardware related.
I just ordered a external adaptor/housing for my NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD so I am going to clone the old image to the new SSD.

Fact is that it happens often going in or coming out of sleep mode, sometimes it crashes while in sleep mode. The crash is very sudden, showing only a BSOD for a few seconds to go into reboot mode with the dreaded message.

5 months later and since returned back to Europe I have not suffered any blue screen combined with "boot media not found".
I do suffer from BSOD but a normal reboot always follows. This PC seems to give me the occasional BSOD while my Thinkpad Tablet X1 performs without any hitch...
I keep my stuff backed up in case.
Do love the Yoga 910 with its 4K touchscreen.

It could also be a heat problem, where an overheated part 'warps' and needs 5-10 minutes to cool down and get back in its original shape.
I'd clean the fan and CPU and put on decent new thermal paste like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.
After that, do a general stress test with a more general software.
Instead of the ubiquitous Prime95, try one of these: https://www.softwaretestinghelp.com/com ... -software/
Or try this simple one which simulates a more realistic environment: https://www.jam-software.com/heavyload?language=EN

A year and a half later...while on my Yoga C930 I got a BSOD during start up in the morning followed by the msg boot device not found. After 5 minutes trying to get it going as it kept complaining there was no boot device - even in the bios there was no SSD listed - it found the SSD and jumped back into life.

The funny part was that the evening before I got home in a heavy storm - by computer bag/trolley get very wet but the computer inside stayed dry. I left it in there during the night to be confronted with the issue.

That seems to coincide with the similar thing I experienced with my yoga 910. It would travel from a very cool hotel room to a very hot space - it condensated when taking the computer out of the bag and it would often have the issue with boot device not found. After a while 5 to 10 min it would recover and booted up normally.

Seems that this boot device issue is not limited to the 910 only.
