READ 1st MSG, follow instructions, get chastised

Zender, a fellow who expends significant effort to develop a solution that will benefit a lot of people, asks for nothing in return but one courtesy...

Ok - I don't understand, but I accept. Guess I should have asked here first. Will somebody who doesn't believe I have committed a indictable offense please send me the link?

Thanks. Any chance anyone knows, based on what's there, which card is best for a dual boot Win7/10.6.4 setup?
My 5100 works great in Win7 but clearly a no go in Snow. I've got everything else working great, just want internal airport.

@hastaply:
this thread is exclusively for BIOS updates.
If you want any info on other subjects (such as Windows 7 or MAC OS/Linux), ask for that in the proper forum.
Much better chances!

Could someone help me to modifying the PCI-ID of the QUALCOMM GOBI 2000 wwan card to match the authorized one.
I have a Lenovo T510 and I have the following BIOS error when I plugged in my new WWAN card:
1804: Unauthorized WAN card is plugged in - Power off and remove the WAN card.

I would like to change the PCI-ID because of the further BIOS update without any issue.

As I see it's possible, but I don't know how should I do this (2nd point by the "Solutions" paragraph):

Many thanks in advance. :)

Greetings.

I sent Zender a PM a few days ago, but when I check my User Control Panel I see the message in the "Outbox" folder. Shouldn't it be in the "Sent Messages" folder?

By the way, Could someone send me a modified BIOS for an x60s (1704 Type), please?

Thank you very much in advance.

Please help to get Zender BIOS. I recently bought Gobi 2000 for my X200T and BIOS error 1804 appears all the time. I downloaded new bios from the Lenovo site 3.14 and it is still the same. I bought Gobi 2000 from Lenovo so I can not understand why it is not in BIOS white list...... Please help to get Zender BIOS for Lenovo X200T 7449 4WG Win 7. Thanks.

Hi, can someone help with the link to Zender's modified bios upgrade? Using X61s with WINXP and plan to use a MC8775 for WWAN. Currently showing error 1804.

Will also appreciate if there will be a step by step guide.

Thanks.

Hello Everyone,

Having sifted through tons of posts and suggestions, I am stuck with the 'error 1802' problem on my Thinkpad R61i which runs on BIOS 7OETB8WW (8932-GNG) trying to fit a Gigabyte GTGN-WI01GT miniPCI-Express WLAN card.

Could someone please provide me with a modded BIOS?

Thanks very much in advance!

I got impatient waiting for Zender to reply to my PM (only a few hours, I'm very impatient) so I worked it out on my own. I haven't seen clear step by step instructions anywhere, so I figured I'd post some. This is for previous generation (*60, *61, X300) BIOSes. Also, I can't be sure if I disabled the whitelist altogether, or just added my card to the list, but it works for me now.

Tools/files you need:
Lenovo BIOS download. Install the application in Windows, but don't flash the BIOS yet.
From this page: http://www.endeer.cz/bios.tools/ prepare.exe: this took forever for me to find. It comes included in the Lenovo BIOS directory! Also took me a while to figure out how to use it right.
From the bottom of http://www.endeer.cz/bios.tools/bios.html, phnxpatch: http://www.endeer.cz/bios.tools/phnxpatch.zip
Also, a hex editor. I used xvi32: http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/f ... /xvi32.htm

Download all the executables and the DLL into one place (say, C:\BIOS), and extract phnxpatch.zip there as well.

Open a command prompt, go to your Lenovo dir (eg C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7luj23us\). Make a temp directory under here, copy *.FL1 there, and then change to that directory.

Decompress FL1. This creates a .FLh file:

Code: Select all

c:\bios\phcomp.exe /d filename.FL1
Split the BIOS:

Code: Select all

c:\bios\phnxdemo-experimental.exe filename.FLh -xs
Patch the BIOS:

Code: Select all

c:\bios\phnxpatch.exe c:\bios\patches .
For me, I now have a file BIOSCOD5.rom.patched. prepare.exe needs 8.3 filenames, so I renamed it BIOSCODA.rom.

Now you have to compress the new file before putting it back into the FLh file. If you have multiple patched files, you'll have to do it for each one of them. This is a little tricky, as it has to be the same size as the original. First, create a file original.scr and put this in it:

Code: Select all

COMPRESS LZINT
BIOSCODE BIOSCOD5.ROM
Also create one for the patched file, patched.scr:

Code: Select all

COMPRESS LZINT
BIOSCODE BIOSCODA.ROM
Compress them both:

Code: Select all

..\prepare.exe original.scr
..\prepare.exe patched.scr
Now, compare the sizes of the files of the created .MOD files. If they're the same, great! If not, you have some work to do. Take BIOSCODA.ROM into the hex editor. Search for the PCI ID of an Intel card: 0x86802742. You're going to change a bunch of the numbers in the whitelist and keep trying to recompress (with prepare.exe patched.scr) until the size matches. I changed some of the Intel cards listed in the file to my card. Remember the endian issue. my device was manufacturer 1814 and device 0681, so I put in 14188106. Save the file, recompress, see if it's the same size. If not, edit again, and make random changes to the Intel card (86802742) bytes until you can get it to match.

After you've got the size matched, you put it back into the .FLh:

Code: Select all

c:\bios\phnxmod filename.flh BIOSCOD5.MOD BIOSCODA.MOD
Then fix the checksum:

Code: Select all

c:\bios\phnxcksm.exe filename.flh
Then, recompress:

Code: Select all

c:\bios\phcomp.exe filename.flh

For me, this created a .FL2 file. Rename it to .FL1, and copy it back to the Lenovo BIOS update directory.

...and you should be done! Run WINUPTP.EXE from the Lenovo BIOS directory, it'll flash your BIOS, and it should ignore the whitelist check! Or at least, if the patching part didn't work right, your card should now be in the whitelist as well.

Edit: Apparently, it's dangerous to flash from within Windows. If you download the ISO image BIOS from Lenovo, follow the same steps, and replace the FL1 file on the CD with the one created, that should work, too.

You're on dangerous ground here!
The golden BIOS update rule:
NEVER ever flash from within Windows (or any OS), remove the computer from a dock, have a charged battery installed and also connect AC power.

You wouldn't be the first one to brick a laptop, while updating the BIOS from within an operating system!

It's nice that someone share their experience with others, it is also helpful. As much as I would like to try and do it myself (I think I can), I'll just wait on a reply from zender. I've put back the card that was in my notebook, so I do have internet. Now if a week goes by and I get no reply, then I might have to mod the BIOS myself. I do have an old IBM I could try it on first, hmmmm......

I wasn't aware of this... thanks! It worked fine for me, so I guess I was lucky. You should be able to follow the same procedure I described on the files inside the ISO image BIOS and create a CD from that.
