Making the X301 screen slightly more acceptable

#1 Post by RMSMajestic » Mon May 25, 2015 5:22 pm

I tried to adjust the the screen on X301 to a slightly more acceptable level and tuned it according to my W701

Open Intel Control Panel
Red:Brightness -1 Contrast 50 Gamma 1.1
Green:Brightness 0 Contrast 49 Gamma 0.9
Blue:Brightness -15 Contrast 49 Gamma 0.9

What do you guys think?

Does any1 have a spyder 4 elite to make the X301 screen better?

When I first started using my X301 I was disappointed in the screen so I played with the Intel Control Panel Settings and the Windows 7 settings. I especially focused on the gamma settings and I didn't record any settings but now I am more than happy and love the screen.
Yes if you look at the screen from wide angles it is poor but this doesn't worry me at all and in the office it is handy IMO.
Also I ran clear type to finish off. I suppose this doesn't help linux users but I went from considering moving on my X301 to now be in love with this lovely machine.

I have got a X-rite colorimeter. I used it with my x61s (One of the best X series Thinkpads, in my opinion, but with one of the worst screens). The screen, with ugly colors and bad contrast, looks nice now, once calibrated. It looks like another screen now.

I created color profiles with a Spyder4Pro for all my X30x machines. While it's definitely an improvement, you should not expect any miracle because the screen is still an abysmal TN panel with low contrast ratio and bad viewing angles.

Yes i have found X301 color profile on NBR forum (Second-hand thinkpad x301 owner's thread) and for me it makes a miracle. Colors become warm and less unattractive. But nothing more. But nothing more.

If you can - you may share your color profiles.

Unfortunately, I'm currently on a business trip abroad and I only have my X240 with me. As I forgot to upload the color profiles to my OneDrive account, it may take some time until I'm able to upload them.

Here's mine, made with Spyder4Elite. It really reduces the brightness but drastically improves the viewing experience overall.
