X30 running Windows 7

#1 Post by mrozema » Fri Jul 10, 2009 5:03 pm

Has anybody tried installing Win7 on their X30 yet?

Most things seem to work ok with the exception of two. The first is the video card. Windows detects two of them and re-installs drivers for both after every reboot.

The second is suspend mode. There is no option to make the system suspend when I close it's lid.

Any ideas?

Thanks! Hopefully I can lend some info around here. I am a former IBM SSR and I used to repair Thinkpads on a regular basis.

I've found the location of the power options, BUT under the drop down for closing the lid suspend is not listed.
The screen turns off, but the system does not go to sleep.

The look is different but the Control Panel is still there. Power options are still in there.

By definition, they *have* to load on every bootup ... ;)

You mean, re-install on every boot-up? Can't say as I've heard that one ...

Yeah, I meant they re-install on every boot-up. Very troubling.

godling: Do you have an X30 with Win7 installed? If so, have you had an driver issues at all?

I've got Win7 on my x31. Had no troubles at all with the install. Everything worked. (You can see my thread titled Windows 7 on x31.)

Only thing that doesn't work, which is a complete perk, is the HUD / buttons. I can't turn my wireless on / off with the buttons. Audio seems to work, even though the HUD doesn't pop up. I haven't gone looking for Vista drivers to do that, yet, so maybe there's hope.

[Edit]
Okay, I just went and tried the Vista drivers. I had to install the ProSet Wireless drivers from Lenovo's download site, rather than the basic drivers that came with the Win7 installation. After that, I re-installed the HotKey driver (also Vista version). Now my Fn+F5 key works as it ought to.

Still no response from the audio buttons, but I might have to go and install Lenovo's Vista drivers for the sound instead.

I'm going to have a look, but do you know if they both use the same video card?

Don't be, your X30 is lower in power consumption.

I just installed 7 on my X31 and so far so good, no aero of course but the OS is running fine, tried the wireless driver for vista and it didn't work so I'm using the windows driver which is functional. :)

I just found a site where someone claims to have the intel i845 chipset working under Windows 7 (custom written driver). I'm not sure if the drivers would be compatible with the i830 chipset in our X30s but you can try that.

http://forums.driverguide.com/showthrea ... 71&t=24422

Last post on that site will link to the driver. I would try it out on my machine but I don't have Windows 7 installed yet.

Thanks!

I should note that the Vista hotkey driver DOES work for Win7 on my x31. I don't get the HUD response (ie, no images pop up showing me the volume level, or mute), but the buttons do work to mute / unmute / raise and lower volume.

Forget about that driver for the i845 chipset. I tried it in XP and its not compatible with the i830 chipset in the X30 (standby mode does not work and it keeps asking to reinstall drivers every boot).

However, users have been able to get the Fujitsu ST4110 Tablet to work in Vista by using an older driver for the 82830m offered by Fujitsu.
I've tried the drivers in XP and they are fully compatible with the X30. If I had a USB DVD-drive I would install Windows 7 to see if it works, but this looks like the best chance to get video and standby working under Windows 7.

I was finally able to try Win7 RTM out on the X30 by installing it from a usb key.

By using the Intel graphic chipset drivers from Fujitsu, I was able to get both video and standby mode working great. In fact, I noticed it resumes from sleep even faster than XP does! But that might be because I have not installed any other programs.
Drivers for sound and the combo wireless card were not originally found but once I installed the XP drivers from the Lenovo site, they both worked.

Although I will probably stick with XP on this machine, Win7 should run just as well as long as you have 1GB of RAM installed.
