T400s and mini-dock 3: video issue

I have a Vista Ultimate T400s that I use with a Mini-Dock 3 plus that's driving a Dell digital monitor. When I redock it, it routinely indicates that the "digital output" isn't working once I get past the intial boot screen. When I lift the LCD and Fn-F7 to turn on the monitor, it works fine, including post future reboots. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. My T30 would automatically adjust to this (admittedly an analog monitor though). I could just redock it and the monitor would work fine.
