Replace original HD for service call?
Replace original HD for service call?
The fan on my X61s just died (thanks Win 7 24 hour backup!). Lenovo's coming out to replace it under warranty. Do I need to re-install my original HD or is it OK to leave my self-upgraded one in? I don't want to mess with the warranty although I don't believe it's associated.
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Replace original HD for service call?
I wouldn't worry about it. The repair person will not check to see what components you have installed. He'll be interested in replacing the fan and going to lunch.
Re: Replace original HD for service call?
That's what I figured but I wanted to be sure.
Thanks

If it were me, I would not have any drive installed in the system so that there's no possibility that it can be accidentally damaged during the repair.

Don't they need a drive to be able to boot it up and test it post repair?

If it's just a simple matter of knowing if the fan spins or not, then I'd say that two things can happen without having a hard drive in the system:
- the fan may spin up when the system is booted; I believe that this is a function of the BIOS or Embedded Controller
- the tech (or you) can use a bootable PC Doctor for DOS utility and run the fan diagnostic

Re: Replace original HD for service call?
The tech came, installed both fans (man he had to take it pretty much completely apart!) and re-assembled it without a problem. I watched him and he never looked at the drive and was very careful with it.
Runs great now...very quiet.
