Just ordered a TP Edge 15"

#1 Post by littlebighorn » Mon Oct 11, 2010 9:15 am

I'm a noob, so be gentle...

I ordered a TP with a 9 cell battery.
Is there a port replicator or docking station available (3rd party or otherwise) that will also charge the battery while docked?

Also, the TP comes with a 65W power adapter. What are the advantages of upgrading to a 90W or even a 135W adapter?

Not for the Edge.

It may charge the battery faster.

There is a special forum for the Edge: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=60 .
The consensus on this forum is, that the Edge is not a real ThinkPad.

Thanks, guys... particularly to the link...

Why would the Edge not be considered a "real" TP?

Thanks again...

Why Edge is not a TP: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=86257

And the Edge forum is placed under: non-ThinkPad Lenovo notebooks

Most of the "reasons" as to why the Edge is not a Thinkpad can be applied, in one way to another, to other Thinkpads, such as SL series, X100e, and to a lesser extent to the L series. So as far as "scientific justifications" go, one can easily suggest that those machines are not true Thinkpads either (and such claims are being made every now and then). And the fact that the administrators, based on their personal opinions, decided to single out this particular Thinkpad and place it in another section of the forum, does not make it a forum-wide consensus (the lack of which was quite evident from the thread linked to).

It's like between Macbook and Macbook Pro: with the first one you get most of the features that make Mac a Mac, but without the premium feature (aluminium case).

The Thinkpad magnesium rollcage is a premium feature.

Which most Thinkpads (X series, L series) don't have. Now you are going to say those are not real Thinkpads either?

I am just describing the phenomenon of Thinkpad classification.

I agree that if the admins call the Edge a non-Thinkpad, they may want to treat the X100e the same way because these two have very similar designs, though the X100e looks a tiny bit more like a traditional Thinkpad. On the other hand, calling them "non-Thinkpads" may be a bit harsh. Admins, would you consider starting a sub-forum called "quasi-Thinkpads" and move both of these there? I understand it may seem wasteful to start a new sub-forum just for two Series, but I bet that Lenovo will release many more quasi-Thinkpads in the future.

PW, you may want to post that suggestion in 'Forum Notices, Questions and Suggestions', otherwise the 'admin' who decides such things might not see it.

Please post a review if and when you get it. I am actually considering one of these for my wife. She loves the Thinkpads, but her favorite color is read. I WILL NOT go out of my way to buy her a non-IBM/Lenovo colored machine. I understand that many think that this isn't considered a true Thinkpad, but I look at it as an easy out for me...it'll have the Thinkpad name for me, and a red lid for her...lol
