There are no socketed CPUs Lenovo could use, as all mobile Intel CPUs are BGA now.

What about the MMC-2 type package. They could make their own of sorts.Ibthink wrote:There are no socketed CPUs Lenovo could use, as all mobile Intel CPUs are BGA now.

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)
That's a waste of money. The reason they stopped producing PGA packages for mobile platform since broadwell is that manufacturers such as Apple and Asus are starting to move away from PGA anyways. Making MMC-2 package will definitely thicken the whole machine a lot that is for sure. MMC packages were designed in the era when laptops have 2 layers of motherboards, like the 600, 770 and 390 series.Thinkpad4by3 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2017 4:31 pmWhat about the MMC-2 type package. Surprised they cant make the BGA into an LGA and it would be cheap to make 1 processor and the buisness machines can just have a LGA socket. Add balls to the LGA CPU. Problem solved.

Those Fokkers couldn't come up with anything better than a T470 with a T420 keyboard?
And still with a sh!tty 16:9 screen?
Pathetic, to say the least.

What happens if they decided to revisit IAUX14S with an optional QXGA upgrade?
Also while I don't have my hopes too high, I at least hope Lenovo is not stupid enough to mark the anniversary with something similar to what Apple did in 1997!

ThinkPad 25: Retro ThinkPad will be based on the ThinkPad T470
Thanks to a certification-site of the TÜVRheinland, we now know that this "Retro ThinkPad" will be based on an existing model
So 16:9?

Here is the link to the TUV accreditation:
https://www.certipedia.com/certificates ... ?locale=en
It appears to be limited to Energy Star compliance.
The model number of ThinkPad 25 (by process of elimination from the above appears to be 20K7 (i.e. only model not in current PSREF).
Being optimistic, or perhaps naive, it is worth remembering that 'based on' doesn't mean the 'same as' (i.e. the Bentley Continental is based on the VW Phaeton)...

To accomodate different screen size you also need different motherboard size. That's why I am being pesimistic. There were also rumors about 13" so the "based on T470" seems to be too vague.ansible212 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 03, 2017 5:32 amBeing optimistic, or perhaps naive, it is worth remembering that 'based on' doesn't mean the 'same as' (i.e. the Bentley Continental is based on the VW Phaeton)...

Pure conjecture, but surely a the motherboard designed to fit into a shallower 16:9 chassis would easily be accommodated in a chassis designed for taller 16:10, 4:3 or screens?

Basically WE (Thinkpad users) have been making Retros ourselves since a few years already!
WE...: T430/s with FHD-mod, T420 keyboard, removed battery-check.
Them: T470-25 with FHD, T420 keyboard, battery-check put back in.
All we really want (and need) is that darned wifi-whitelist removed.
Hopefully one of these days we'll be able to that ourselves again!

One advantage of basing it on a T470 would be docking station compatibility, and possibly other accessories as well.

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)
That's the exact piece of info that I'm waiting for myself, and which will likely be a deciding factor between "yes" or "no" when it comes to so-called Retro and silly old me.
I'm somewhat OK with the "nostalgia mining" concept. Musical instruments industry has turned it into a significant source of revenue over the past 35 years, and the car manufacturers have been piling on for the past decade or so...but there's a not-so-fine line between the aforementioned concept and blatant cashing-in on the fact that quite a few people have been upset with Lenovo's changes to the ThinkPad line over the last several years.
In other words, a T470 with a proper keyboard labelled as "Classic/Retro/whatever" is nothing short of an outright insult in my book. If Lenovo is really intent on bringing back the feature that no one had asked them to remove in the first place and charging a premium for it under the guise of "hey, this is the last chance you'll get for a normal keyboard on a ThinkPad ever, so hurry up and grab them while they're hot" approach is not going to fly with me regardless of the price tag, and under any set of circumstances.
On the other hand, present it with a 3:2 or a 16:10 screen and you have my attention. Not that I've forgotten the entire "yes you can vote for 4:3 but you're not getting it anyway" rude nonsense...
I've recently picked up a NOS BlackBerry Classic to replace my failing 9900 and while there are several things about it that I dislike very deeply, I'll say that it's well-worthy of its "Classic" designation. An upcoming ThinkPad should offer no less, especially for the fact that there are inherent compromises with the given platform that many of us will have difficulty swallowing but can't blame Lenovo for them in the least...

With proper design, that can be avoided. The system boards of the 14.1 and 15 inch T4x and R5x series shared a common size/form factor; same with the 14.1 and 15 inch non-widescreen T6x.

Hmmm... I wonder how many corners Lenovo is going to cut, as in, how easy it is to upgrade a T470 into a 25 edition.
Hopefully it is 16:10, and they just use a modified lid, kinda like how the Dell Latitude E6430s, which basically was Dell's 13" E6330 with a 14" screen.
Disappointed though.

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)
I said it already.
It seems that a 14.1" 16/10 could fit perfectly well in a T470 chassis.
So T470 + classic kboard + 16/10 is perfectly doable and would not require too much retooling.
I am not sure they did it, but i really do hope it is the case.

Notice the trackpoint on the R470 keyboard is the recessed type. If it gets the 2560x1440 or OLED screen, would that be enough to beat 16:10 or 4:3? T470 is actually a really nice laptop and had they not ditched the classic keyboard, this is probably what the T470 would look like in that alternate timeline.
T470 features a removable battery, removable RAM, RJ45, dock port, 2.5" bay and M.2. Unfortunately its speakers are downward facing (most retro feature) and I am sad about the lack of a Thinklight (?).

Two: for me, more pixels the better. 1024x768 vs 2560x1440, the 1440p all the way.
