MATLAB on T4x

#1 Post by rp » Thu Jul 07, 2005 2:04 pm

Hello!

Been a 'lurker' for a while. :) - love this forum. Finally decided to become a member.

I am in the market for a new laptop. The Thinkpad T4x is on top of my wishlist.

I will be primarily using it to run MATLAB simulations. Does anybody have experience with such a scenario? Would appreciate any feedback/comments to help me decide if the T4x is the right choice. Additional comments regarding choice of T42/T43 are also welcome. Thanks in advance.

cheers!

ive used matlab for scripts and whatnot, and it worked just as good as on my desktop..same speed and everythin. i mostly run full compilers not scripted stuff but runs great either way

The Pentium-M architecture is actually faster than Pentium-4/Athlon for numerical calculations, so the T4x is in fact better than a desktop for such use. Hell, my T42 is faster than using 4 Athlon nodes on a Beowulf cluster when running Monte Carlo simulations!

I would suggest getting a T42, as you will probably find them at better prices than the T43, which doesn't offer a real advantage while have slightly lower battery life. A 1.8 or 2.0 Ghz T42 is an excellent choice IMO, if you can get a cheap 1.86 T43 you could also go for that.

Thanks Nabeel and stgreek! Appreciate your quick response. I am leaning towards the 2373M3U among the T42s. Some of the T43s look interesting too.
Lets see........

Btw, I noticed that I have the same model as Nadeel, 2378-FVU. An excellent choice.

The P model will be great for any of the plotting you'll have to do. Honestly I am sure it will work very well...
