Avast premier on a X230 kills sound

#1 Post by TinkerMan » Mon Apr 22, 2019 2:29 am

after installing win 7 pro and all the system updates, everything was working fine, than proceeded to installing avast premier, reboot, everything works except sound, no matter that is youtube or a PC file played with VLC player, there is no sound,
I de-install avast, sound is back, I reinstall it, sound is gone again.
has anyone else encountered this problem??
any suggestions?

Dump Avast and replace it with the (free) Bitdefender. https://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html
Only (minor) irritation there: every time you go to a new website you haven't been on before, it shows you a "blocked" warning.
But just one click and you're in.
The next time you go there, no more warning/problem.

I personally go with MalwareBytes. Ive been using them for years and it's also free to run. The autoscan functionality is unlocked with purchasing it but it is completely free to run by hand and it catches everything.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

For what it's worth, we have a working X230 with Win 7 Home (64 bit), and with AVAST Free installed.
The sound is working.

In fact, we use AVAST Free extensively on almost all our computers, and have never had any sound issues,
for both Win7 (64-bit) and Win10 (64-bit).

Unfortunately we have no idea why your sound is not working after AVAST Premier installation...

And also, is yours a French version of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit?

Uninstall the graphics driver, then reinstall this: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds034834
It includes part audio, part GPU, part other stuff.

YESSS, this solved the problem, thanks a lot dude

on a side note, now I get an error message each time I boot the system, right after it enters the windows screen

"Unable to start the Dolby audio driver. please restart the computer or reinstall the driver if the problem persists"

restarting the computer doesnt cure the problem

Dump Avast, or see how Linux behaves.

UPDATE: After reinstalling win 7 and INstalling all drivers and all updates before INstalling avast, it works fine. The first time avast was installed before the 200+ Windows updates.

[Thread tangent warning!]

Hi TinkerMan, do you know of any Lifetime Licence offer for AVAST antivirus?

If you do, would appreciate if you would give us a shout!

Avast was great 10 years ago. Right now MSE with a spyware scanner is far better, and free.
