Best maintenance practises for Thinkpad T4x laptops

#1 Post by selbion » Sat Apr 26, 2025 11:34 am

Hi all,
I recently purchased a Thinkpad T41 (untested as of now, I need to get a charger). I wanted to ask your opinion regarding the best practises to maintain these models and preventing faults.
I've also read many posts here regarding GPU issues on these models because of the soldering - are there any preventative measures I could take to mitigate the risk of this occurring? Has anyone here had the opportunity to reball the GPU on a laptop like this; how effective was the repair?

Thank you so much for your time, any feedback would be greatly appreciated! :)

Deep cleaning and Thermal compound replacement. If the laptop doesn't have a longfan invest in one, it can save your gpu.

Welcome to the forum!

A couple of things here...

a) The youngest T4x will turn 20 years old this year. At this point in the game any of them can drop dead without a warning at any time.

b) These are hot-running systems, generally speaking. Undervolting the CPU/GPU and using ThinkPad Fan Control mitigates the issue, and can prolong the lifespan of the machine.

c) When I used T4x units with ATi graphics they were on 24/7/365, never put to sleep and/or suspended. Just the LCD got turned off to prolong its longevity. Whether that approach makes sense in A.D. 2025 is up to you to decide.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you for your suggestions and feedback, this has been very insightful. I have been able to get a charger and test the laptop. I was able to boot into Windows without issue, I think all that needs replacing is the cmos battery and new thermal paste.

I'll deffinetly look into getting a long fan. I might hold off using the laptop until I can find an affordable one.

I don't think I would be able to run the computer for that long, but I'll deffinetly consider undervolting if I can figure out how to do it. I don't think I'll be doing anything intensive on this system.

I am still running a T42 and a T43 and I had a T41 die probably from a heat related issue about a year ago.

Yes we know that these systems are old and certainly will fail if over heated constantly. You really don't know the history of your T41 and it is still untested.

If it does work flawlessly I would set the bios and your operating system to "Maximum Battery Life". Also I would undervolt the cpu using Notebook Hardware Control. Also set the ATI display software to performance rather than quality and set PowerPlay.

I wouldn't recommend internet access for the unit as this would certainly cause heat issues. Use software and games from around the period that the machine was created. That is obviously early 2000"s.

My T42 and T43 run between 36 and 45 degrees which is what you should try to replicate.

Good luck

As others have pointed out - definitely good luck - these systems are definitely reaching the end of their useful life. But thinkpad fan control has definitely helped my PC's maintain longevity over the years.
