WTB: Windows 98/98SE High-Performance Laptop - Thinkpads or other brand
Hello,
I am looking for a quality Windows 98 laptop, ideally at or near the top of the line (16 or 32mb GPU) to run some old programs and especially some Windows 95 and 98 games From Sega, Sierra, and EA. Whichever laptops are known to be reliable or that have been refurbished to address chronic concerns such as the T40 line. So if you have a T21,23, T40/41/42 (especially p), R51/52, Toshiba, Sony Vaio, Dell, or another one not mentioned but does fit the bill - please reach out.
Cheers
Edit: Adjusted title and first post to be better encompassing.

I don’t have any for sale, but I’m curious as to why you only want T21? From my (limited) understanding, all T20/21/22 has blink of death issues, and some (maybe all?) T23’s are ‘safe’. It’s very possible I’m wrong so someone please correct me if I am. Also, T42 with Radeon 7500 has native win98 support too I think, so that is another option.
Best of luck with finding one

I do not know of that blink of death, from what I had read the T21 was the reliable one but I could very much not have sourced enough info. I am very much open to the T23 if that is safe and also with a T42, I'll update my titlePlunkyy wrote: ↑Sun May 04, 2025 11:43 amI don’t have any for sale, but I’m curious as to why you only want T21? IMHO your best and most reliable W98 Thinkpad would be a 15" R52 with SXGA+ and Intel graphics.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Has anyone even managed to get the GMA 900 working in Windows 98 at all? I always assumed that the GMA series all have no Windows 98 drivers, only the Extreme graphics do.RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Thu May 08, 2025 9:18 amIMHO your best and most reliable W98 Thinkpad would be a 15" R52 with SXGA+ and Intel graphics.

Re: WTB: Windows 98/98SE High-Performance Laptop - Thinkpads or other brand
I've re-edited my first post so it's not keeping such a narrow lane. I wasn't sure about mentioning non-Thinkpads here but the more I read people's posts, the more I see that some folks do deal in general computing but their preference may be - but isn't exclusive to - Thinkpads.
Thank you folks for the contribution, now I just need to find a laptop

Oh... In this case, I got a Dell Latitude D800 and D610 I can offer on the table. These are solid performers for late Windows 98 stuff, With the D800 having a GeForce FX 5650 Go which speeds through 3DMark01 with flying colours. The only downside for the D800 is the somewhat subpar look and feel of the plastics and the widescreen form factor (1920x1200).Gweeneth wrote: ↑Tue May 13, 2025 8:41 amI've re-edited my first post so it's not keeping such a narrow lane. D610 would be a 4:3 machine like a 14.1" T43. Radeon X300, SXGA+ screen, also an uglier design than the T4x, but much more reliable and has no motherboard problems anywhere I find on ebay.
I also have a Latitude C400, which is like X23, but has an Intel iGPU instead of Radeon, but a much faster 1.2Ghz PIII-M and two non-soldered SODIMMs.
I imagine these are the kind of machines that would save you a lot of money and would make you feel much less bad about abusing them. I like my R40 and R5x for the same reason.
I'll PM you with details if interested
